It's a sad truth that the glorious halcyon days of the milk bar are on their way out. I'm lucky I still have one of these bastions of neighbourhood community on the corner of my block, run by an awesome Lebanese family, but the Coles and 7 Elevens of our world are killing them one by one. Well, perhaps some can live on as cafes, as with Jerry's Milkbar in Elwood. A glorious place with a focus on great cafe fare and Genovese coffee, it recently survived the wrath of another would-be conquer when a car accidentally smashed throughout he heritage-listed facade.
