Tight budget? Looking for a night out for around $20? Hop on board the RSL revolution – live music, great (cheap) food and you might meet a digger with story to tell.

Editorial

A quiet revolution is happening in Australia's RSL clubs; once dark, dingy, smoke-filled dens of iniquity where nobody under 50 would dare to enter, full of stinky old men and sticky carpet, RSL clubs are transforming into vibrant community hubs with kid-friendly facilities, great cheap food and live entertainment.

The Elwood RSL is a great example of a modern, progressive RSL, attracting locals of all ages, including young couples, families with kids as well as returned service men and women. The interior décor won't win any awards, but the community atmosphere, and all-ages clientele is a rare experience in the city.

Entertainment includes The Slouch Club with live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Bands include such genres as 'euro folk groove', 60's & 70's rock and blues by well-known Melbourne musicians. Check out the Elwood RSL website for more info.

The Back Room Bistro offers international cuisine and an extensive wine list with house specials. Beers include your usual true-blue Australian brands with a few boutique beers thrown in for good measure. The Home Made Beef and Guinness Pie goes down a treat, and the Chicken Parma was voted by The Age as one of the best in Melbourne. Kids are also well catered for, with a special menu for the little ones, and a separate family room with a 'kids play corner' where they can happily run amok.
