Watermark

A dependable Docklands drop-in spot.

Editorial

At the time of writing, the precinct that is home to the Watermark remains in a sort of cultural limbo. With its proximity to the CBD and water frontage, the Docklands must've looked great on paper. The fact remains, though, the area is yet to really ignite.

Yet to become a true destination, the Docklands serves up hospitality only to a few. Along with from a handful of residents and workers, this micro-economy is largely fed by footy fans. All hospitality in the area retains a sort of utilitarian feel. The Watermark is no exception.

While the views here are genuinely lovely and the interior architecture inoffensively chic, the lack of local vibe makes the place a bit lifeless. It has the feel of nothing so much as an upmarket TAFE café. This is through no fault of the management; it's just Docklands karma for the present.

The food here is decent and the drinks, thanks to the slow growth of the area, can be heavily discounted depending on the time of day. A range of weeknight promotions, including the almost endearingly antique Ladies Night, unfurl in order to attract more punters.

If you're in the area, this is a reliable joint that can be a nice, featureless backdrop to a good conversation.
