Livebait
Editorial
If you can see the ocean from your restaurant table, what do you expect? Seafood, of course, and Livebait lives up to all expectations with a menu that heavily features the fruits de la mer. This restaurant is positioned right at the water’s edge, and the view from upstairs gives a particularly pleasant vista towards the CBD and its towers through huge windows. The decor is modern and simple, because the star attractions are the twinkling lights of the city. All the tables, however, are set elegantly, and the food, too, is very attractively plated.
The menu offers something for everyone and all tastes. All the high-end seafood favourites are listed – oysters, prawns, crayfish, crab, and there’s a vast seafood platter to tempt the most die-hard fans. There are Japanese and other Asian influences at work, such as the tempura-battered fish and chips, seaweed salads, and discs of tempura potato in place of the usual chips. For a light and simple start to your meal, try the tempura prawns with a mango salad. Alongside the seafood dishes there’s a cracking good steak to follow, plus there are plenty of vegetarian options available too. Servings are big, so take along a good appetite. There’s a good range of drinks, including Australian and imported beers, and a wine list that is reasonably priced, especially given the location. Note there is a surcharge on weekends and public holidays, and for some credit cards. Service can be a bit slow on busy days, but at least there is always something to look at. Remember to book, even for lunch.

Be aware that this restaurant charges a 10% surcharge just for dining there on the weekend! This makes the bill very expensive. It puts this restaurant into the fine dining category and although the view is lovey and the food is good, the service is not up to fine dining standard and the decor is looking tired. We found it to be a bit disappointing.
