Editorial

The Prince Patrick, one of those large, ornate corner pubs built in the 1880s, was always known as a comedy and music venue. Since its makeover, the once dingy interior is now bright and fresh, with white walls throughout. The bar flows through to a casual eating area, and then continues to a restaurant space where the floors are dark timber, the tables are dressier, and bold paintings by a Western Australian artist hang on the walls. In warmer weather, the doors are flung open on to a very pleasant courtyard.

There are two menus - one for the restaurant, one for the bar - but they apply to all areas. In the restaurant, there is also a blackboard with a considerable list of the day's specials. The food is a cross between traditional pub and bistro fare. To start, order a selection of dips or some oysters. Mains include risotto, a fish of the day, pasta, and some good cuts of steak. It's a popular place for local businesspeople. The bar menu includes old favourites like fish and chips, and a hamburger with the lot; however, they're all a cut above the usual. The fish is fresh and succulent, the batter crisp. The burger is generous, with good quality meat (lots of flavour and no greasiness), and long-cooked onions, as well as a bright, fresh salad. The wine list is adequate, and reasonably priced, and there are about half a dozen beers on tap.
