The Peel Hotel

One of London's most famous gay clubs - sadly removed from its original huge venue in order to make room for a fancy new tube station amidst frantic Olympic Games preparations - makes absolutely no bones about what it offers. Branded G.A.Y, it does exactly what it says on the tin - gay, gay, gay all the way, with Kylie, Britney, Madonna and co. every Saturday night.
I've often thought Collingwood's infamous Peel Hotel should go the same way. It's super-gay, that's for sure. Every weekend the fairly sizeable venue is crammed to the rafters with the younger crowd lapping up the silly pop beats. It's damned good fun all round and, despite a huge press hullabaloo surrounding a brief anti-straight-girl blip, it's the ideal place to bring your bestest glam fag hag for a spin round the dance floor, accompanied by the latest Gaga tune. And they never seem to close, either.
There's no fancy cocktails here - just cheap beer and straight (no pun intended) mixers. Recent renovations did away with a smaller rear dance floor, converting it into a simply massive outdoor smoking area, which often contains the majority of the crowd. Perhaps the government needs to aim more educational money at convincing young gay folks not to smoke?
