The Fox Hotel
Editorial
Renovated in recent years, this is no stinky old man pub. Owned and managed by three women, you can see that a lot of love and attention to detail has gone into creating a warm and welcoming feel. Step inside and you're embraced by warm décor, including an open fireplace, exposed brick and chunky wooden furniture - definitely built for comfort, not speed. And thankfully there's no TAB or pokies - you come here to enjoy quality time with friends or enjoy the live music.
The selection of bottled beers is a bit mind-blowing: an extensive list of local and imported labels features brands from far-flung corners of the world like Holland (Rich Dutch Coco with Vanilla), or the Russian Baltika No3 from St Petersburg. There's also quite a few local and international organic brews to chose from, and if they don't stock your favourite brew, ask the bartender to see if they can order it in. And if your tipple is fine wine, you'll be chuffed with the thoughtfully compiled wine list - more evidence of careful attention to detail. A generous selection of sparkling labels, includes the creamy Pongracz Pinot/Chard Brut from Western Cape in South Africa. Reds and other whites span a wide range of tastes, with a smattering of well-researched organic varieties.
Attracting mostly inner-city locals, the pub has gained a reputation for classic old-school pub ambience, but with all the mod-cons like a rooftop deck with stunning views of the city. There's heaps to keep you busy, with a table tennis room, pool table, board games, pinball machine, great sound system and local bands featured in the Local Brew band competition sessions on Thursdays (free entry).
This is a pub that aims to please, and that attitude extends to the food as well, including a plethora of vegetarian and gluten free options. Try the Morton Bay Bug pie with lemon myrtle and garlic butter for $17. You'll want seconds.
