Suede

A reliable drinking den and chilled-out Sunday afternoon boozer, Suede is one of Smith street's smooth operators.

Editorial

Suede has a real laidback vibe. Wander in on a Saturday afternoon and you can sink into one of the couches by the entrance while the sun seeps in and jazz plays in the background. It's certainly a reprieve from some of the crazies that wonder Smith streer.

The venue is spread over three levels and the decor is a mish-mash of styles. The ground floor has a long bar, rows of tables opposite (presumably for the meals on offer), and couches towards the front. This set-up is complimented with some floral lampshades, random wall installations and draping curtains. Upstairs is available for private functions and features the same mix of older couches and draped curtains. There's also a second bar and some pool tables. Fitting in with Suede's general vibe, everything is pretty loose and comfortable in the decor department. There might not be a central ?theme' to the place, but it holds it all together well enough.

That said, the cocktail menu is actually pretty extensive. Most of these will run you around the $16 mark and there's a good selection of classics and house specials. House specials like A Nice Pear - fresh grated ginger, muddled with lime and lychee, shaken with pear vodka, apple liqueur and apple juice.

While Suede isn't redefining Melbourne bar culture, its presence on Smith street is a welcome addition to the area and nice refuge from the area's more random locals.
