Ilk Bar

With the increasing gentrification of our inner city suburbs it’s reassuring to know that simple bars such as Ilk Bar still exist.

Editorial

After all these years I still get a laugh out of Ilk Bar. Why is it called Ilk Bar? Well, it used to be a Milk Bar but the M fell off. And why is the elk motif so ubiquitous here? Well, that’s just more of that ironic humour that goes to making this such a great little bar. And let’s not forget Daryl, the elk head mounted on the wall.

On first visit you may think you have stepped into someone’s lounge room, and in a sense you have. Retro lounge suites and coffee tables are nothing new in an inner city bar but it’s about how well you do it, and they do retro well here. It’s stylish as opposed to down and out. The front room where the bar is located is cosy and fills up fast. However, there’s plenty of nooks in this long building and plenty more of that comfy retro furniture. If you head out back far enough you will find yourself in the leafy courtyard, which during sunny days, is the preferred drinking posi.

Thursday sees open mic night which draws a good crowd and Vinyl Delight with DJ Ramona appeases those with a penchant for punk, ska, new wave and rock on a Saturday evening.

The drinks are simple and more than reasonably priced with beer the preferred tipple. You get the impression you better stick to local brews, however, order a Peroni and they won’t look at you funny. Best not start banging on about fancy cocktails though, that could raise a few eyebrows.
