The Corkman Irish Pub
Editorial
One of the beautiful facets of living in Melbourne is the fact that even with a drinking culture such as ours, no matter what you do you're still going to be amazed by bars you never knew existed. The Corkman is well known to Carlton residents and cooler kids from Melbourne uni, but perhaps not many others due to its almost hidden location off the beaten track in the charming, wide-back streets of Carlton.
Stepping into the Corkman is akin to stepping into a hidden oasis of drinking. Their courtyard and beer garden is one of the best in the entirety of Melbourne, if only because you never, ever expected it to be there. As it looks like a traditional Irish corner pub from the outside, The Corkman is a pleasing deception once you discover that it stretches out into a large dining area, with a traditional looking front bar area, a sublime lowered courtyard and plenty of seating everywhere.
This pub also happens to be one of the few genuine, authentic Irish bars in Melbourne - owned as it is by a pair of Irishmen - and prides itself on being as friendly as one would expect back in the motherland. It is actually a shock to find a pub so well presented in a location you never would've expected.
Their restaurant specialises in a mixture of traditional Irish and Australian dishes - so you can expect all the old favourites - while the bar totes an impressive selection of red and white wines, and, unsurprisingly, both Guinness and Kilkenny on tap. It makes it all the more easy to pop down either from work or uni to down a tasty meal or cold brew. If only i could've gotten into Melbourne Uni ?
