Rathdowne Tavern

A rustic, old hotel-cum-gastro pub, the Rathdowne Tavern has gained a reputation for serving cold beer in stylish surrounds.

Editorial

Don't let the crumbling facade fool you; the Rathdowne tavern is a sleek and modern operation. The building has been around since the late 19th century and the flaking paint and rough exterior is simply a nod to its history. Step inside and you'll find ornate fixtures, polished floors and large arched windows.

Comprised of a main bar, restaurant and function room, the Rathdowne is a multifaceted venue with a minimalist design aesthetic. The front bar showcases this nicely with its white walls, clean lines and simple, wooden furniture. All of this serves to make the large chandelier in the centre of the bar all the more impressive. The functions room is similarly restrained and sticks with treated walls, polished floors and a large, ornate fireplace to make its mark.

The drinks selection at the Rathdowne is what you would expect from a local pub; there's plenty of beer on tap and a reasonable wine selection (also available with your meal in the adjoining restaurant). While they don't specialise in cocktails, the bar staff can certainly put a few things together for you if you insist on being 'different'.

So, to end on a cliche, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Turns out the same thing applies to pubs. The refurbished Rathdowne has quickly become a favourite among Carlton locals. Poke your head in and find out why.
