Editorial

Founded in 1967 in a former lingerie factory, La Mama Theatre is a powerhouse of creativity that helped spawn the Australian theatre scene of the 1970s, when actors, writers and directors such as David Williamson, Jack Hibberd, Barry Dickens, John Romeril and Graeme Blundell called its tiny stage home. Some 25 new Australian plays premiered at La Mama within its first two years of operation, and new works remain its lifeblood today.

The venue may be tiny - seating no more than 50 people - but it is the home of some of Melbourne's most exciting contemporary theatre productions. It's the place to be if you're passionate about performance, and is the best place to see the next generation of Australian theatre makers, actors and playwrights honing their skills.

Allegedly haunted by a friendly ghost, the tiny Carlton venue is only minutes away from the bustling restaurants and bookshops of cosmopolitan Lygon Street, making it an ideal destination for visitors and locals alike. Come early for a drink in the recently expanded courtyard before the show, and make sure you keep your ticket for the traditional raffle.

Productions at La Mama may sometimes be cheaply mounted, but they're always performed with commitment and skill.
