Editorial

Ricky Holt, who has been at the Rathdowne Street Food Stone since day one, has overseen the growth of this charming eatery. It began as his part-time job and a local takeaway joint but has evolved into an exceptional restaurant offering quality dishes, delicious pastries and great service. Holt says Rathdowne's growth mirrors that of Melbourne's coffee culture, and also plots the shift away from traditional night-time dining and towards cheaper and more convenient breakfast and brunch options. Glorious morning menu dishes like the ricotta hotcakes woo people before midday, while the lunch menu holds its own with the roasted fennel, goat's cheese and green olive walnut pesto gnocchi among its best. For the old-fashioned dinner people, Holt highlights the duck pie as a local favourite. All three menus have great range with plenty of healthy and hearty recipes, as well as good options for all those Carlton North vegetarians.

Takeaway is still a popular option at Rathdowne Street, and while high demand has pushed catering and baking off-site, all the pastries are still made fresh by and for the food store. Dinner mains range from $12.50 to $32.50 while lunch starts at $9.50.
