North Cafeteria
Editorial
This petite and simple café packs them in morning and afternoon, simply because it is very good. Let's start with what is fast becoming their legendary coffee and work our way through. People travel here for a latte. That's saying something for a suburb that prides itself on its coffee. The blend is Supreme and the baristas here are finicky about each and every brew they make. They understand how to make a piccolo too, a simple short coffee that seems to elude too many baristas in Melbourne.
Then there's North's non- pretentious but confident menu. The 'Champions Breakfast', consists of perfectly cooked boiled eggs served in trophy cups, soldiers and homemade tomato relish - it's a major hit with kids and adults alike. The brat bagel (bacon, rocket avocado, tomato and lemon mayonnaise) is completely addictive, and New Yorkers would be most pleased with North's take on the Reuben Sandwich - there's folk who are bypassing whole suburbs to get their hands on one of North's Reubens too.
Kids are well catered to with Junior toasties, and afternoon delights such as Gingerbread bears. For those who shun the coffee bean there's the very Byron Bay LSD (latte, soy dandelion). Delicious and an excellent liver restorative for those coping with the night before.
This is a light-filled cosy café that sports a black and white hand-drawn wallpaper installation by artist Sadie Chandler and original Saarinen tulip chairs. There's also an excellent range of design mags and impressive touches such as their bird logo stamped on their take away cups. North is an extremely down to earth little cafe that has one very loyal following.

Great review. I love this cafe, it is a blessing for Rathdowne St residents.
