At the posh end of Rathdowne Street you'll find Black Ruby. Clean cut and light-filled, it carries itself with a casual brand of classiness. The decor is stark and elegant, and makes beautiful use of the building's Victorian architecture. With its large windows taking in leafy North Carlton, and white linen tablecloths as crisp as a Sauv Blanc on a sunny day, Black Ruby is a perfectly lovely place to waste an afternoon away. The most popular item on the menu, according to chef and co-owner John Stone, is the spinach-wrapped kangaroo served with smoked eggplant, blue cheese, besan-battered baby corn, pomegranate syrup and marinated prunes.

Another popular option for the indecisive is a tasting plate made up of a selection of entrees; it includes dips, black bean sausage, prosciutto-wrapped duck rillettes, prawn dumplings and asparagus polenta drumsticks. Dinner mains are very reasonably priced, ranging from $19-$30; and there are plenty of gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options available. Black Ruby is both licensed and BYO, and has function capacity for up to 30 people. Stay tuned for Sunday afternoons of live jazz coming soon.
