A live music hub for Brunswick's new settlers.

Editorial

The Penny Black Bar shares its name with that of the world's first postage stamp which originated from the United Kingdom circa 1840 and is fittingly located in the former Brunswick postal hall. There will come a time when, in Melbourne, all grand old postal halls succumb to new contemporary use. Some fall into the hands of restaurateurs, some become up market retail hubs and as is the case with the Penny Black, some become live music venues. The heritage detail that has been preserved along with the addition of some quirky modern features results in a venue that, for its Sydney road, Brunswick location presents a taste of what's about to come to Melbourne's rapidly upward-moving inner northern working class suburbs.

A menu of cheap but decent pub grub (pizzas, burgers, parmas all under $15) supports the drinking habits of the increasingly growing live music loving clientele who have come know the area as their new home. Brunswick supports a thriving bar culture and The Penny Black holds a position at the forefront of this scene. With regular live bands playing inside and DJs in the beer garden (which by the way is pretty nice), there's a lot to keep you entertained over the duration of a rockin' Saturday night or a cruisy Sunday afternoon.

The bar serves up fairly much front bar fare, with Carlton Draught on tap. If you're headin' Brunnie way, do as the locals do and get licked at The Penny Black.
