The Green Refectory

Walk too fast, and you’ll miss this busy little cafe where the coffee is good, the mood cheerful and the tables usually full all through the day.

Editorial

There's little indication from the outside, except for a bright coffee sign, as to what a lively place The Green Refectory really is. There are only two rooms. The first taken up by the display counter and coffee machine and a few tables, its walls covered in blackboards with lists of what's available to eat-in or takeaway. The back room is a homely mix of styles: stripped brick walls, a painted tongue and groove ceiling, wooden tables and assorted chairs and benches (some with cushions), and an improbable chandelier.

The food is fresh, hearty and delicious. Check out the displays at the front for tempting salads and platters and go with whatever sounds good among the daily specials. Breakfast here, whether early or late, will set you up for the day. The big breakfast, with eggs and all the trimmings (including fresh greens) even manages to look exceedingly pretty. There are a few nice touches, such as water bottles that are brought to every table. Throughout the afternoon, check out the coffee and cakes to go. Order a whole cake if you're hungry enough.

Every friday we'd order a Big Breakfast, a flat white coffee and a miscelaneous juice. Neither of us have ever eaten anything else from this cafe. The Big Breakfast (from memory it was: eggs to order -always poached for us- saussage, avocado, haloumi, home made beans, spinach, mushrooms, bacon and toast) and I have yet to find anything like it anywhere else. I live in Perth now (where you pay the same amount for badly cooked eggs, greasy bacon and a hash brown) Yes, there is no table service, you have to order off the board and the staff are just there to take your order, but it is really great for the money (just try eating in Perth). I wouldn't recommend sitting outside in the courtyard, but we never had a bad experience there.
