Retreat Hotel

Funked-up haven for the grungy, live music loving set, this is one laidback pub - quite literally a retreat from the madness of the outside world.

Editorial

The Retreat is one of those rare treats - an unpretentious neighbourhood pub with great food, regular live music seven nights a week, a huge beer garden and a public bar that both the stinky old men and the new-schoolers feel right at home in. And having been around for over 100 years, I get the feeling they're doing something right.

The big old corner pub gives you plenty of options, from sitting outside on the street watching the passing parade, to the cosy, if slightly worn, public bar, to beer garden with a 'no chairs' picnic lawn. If you ask nicely, you'll get a picnic blanket for lazing in the sun under real trees - yes, this is a beer garden that's actually a garden - with plants, flowers and real grass.

The overall décor is an eclectic mix of retro furniture that can stand a few spills, a few murals on the walls and a pastiche of colours, ranging from bright orange to pink to whatever. Fun and funky. This is one of those pubs that you could rock up to in the early afternoon on a Saturday and spend the whole day here hanging out with your mates playing pool or shaking your booty to some retro hits on the dancefloor.

Beers include a selection of boutique and mainstream beers on tap, including Coopers and Little Creatures. Food is standard pub grub, but servings are HUGE and good value for money. I dove right into the super meaty parma with a few pots of Cascade to take the edge of a long week. But if you're an herbivore, note that there are heaps of vegetarian and vegan options to choose from.

In a day and age where looks are everything and first impressions are made by the expense of your appareal, you can rest easy at the retreat hotel as one can mosey on in and feel relaxed in this modern yet laid back brunswick pub. With a good amount of elbow room at the bar and ample beer gardern, the retreat is great for a non formal get together or full on rukus of a night. Not known for it's superior music, if your lucky you may just get in on a decent set on a saturday night!
