Ray's Cafe
Editorial
There was a time when Rays was legendary with locals due to its too-cool-for-school service. However, the other elements were so good you gritted your teeth and went through the debacle of the staff's poncing behaviour because the benefits outweighed the pain. All that has changed. In recent times the waiters have been friendly and efficient, almost like they've been given a good talking to, and now it's just a win-win situation.
The coffee is outstanding. It's Atomica and always well made. There are those who refuse to go anywhere else in Brunswick for coffee - it's just that good.
There's a Middle Eastern slant to the menu. The toasted pide with rose jam and labne is a far superior take on the standard toast and jam. The lamb kofta meatballs with hummus, rocket, lemon and honey yogurt is fairly fancy comfort food and the Arabian style bircher muesli with cream, pistachio, poached fruit and honey is absolutely among the best in town. For the health conscious, try it warm with yoghurt instead of cream, it's still beyond wonderful.
Ray's has the look of a small converted warehouse with paint distressed walls and exposed metal beams. The large front window bathes the communal table in a good amount of soft light and the tables themselves are lovely solid wooden things with stylish wood inlays. The high back chairs are comfortable and for those outside its all about wooden box seats which can double as tables when the overflow reaches capacity.
Stencil art and graffiti out the front adds to the industrial arty cool aesthetic and the music is always perfectly pitched in genre and volume.

So true about the 'too-cool-for-school' staff. We stopped going there for that very reason, and have to say it's great to hear it's changed. Will give it another go...hope this review is right.
