A Minor Place
Editorial
Brunswick is cool. There is no denying that. It's a multi-cultural haven where hipsters stroll alongside Muslims and young urban families mix it up with a plethora of gays and lesbians. It's Melbourne's little Brooklyn, and A Minor Place would be right at home in Brooklyn's Williamsburg.
This weatherboard house that was converted into a milk bar and now a café, is away from the madness of Sydney Road and away from any other café's, or shops for that matter. However, this place ain't busting at the seams due to a lack of options - people travel to be here. The food is among the best café food in Melbourne. From the French toast with pistachio ricotta, stewed rhubarb and maple syrup to the scrambled egg and free range bacon roll to the Mumbler (poached eggs with pesto, fetta, spinach, tomato and dukka) to the salami pide - the food is fresh and exquisitely tasty.
The coffee is great too. It's a dark blend, care of the popular Atomica label, and brewed on a Synesso machine no less.
Two communal tables buzz with groups and singles tapping away on their laptops. There's a couple of booths and individual tables for couples. There are plenty of outdoor tables where locals sit with their dogs and during busy times (which is a lot of the time) people mingle around out front waiting for a spot. Inside it's a light filled, relaxed feel with lots of wood and quirky but simple art. The music, which can get a little too cranked on occasion, is generally the latest indie/rock band out of, well…Brooklyn, of course.
