Padre Coffee - Brunswick East
Editorial
The thing about a café that roasts its own coffee is that it smells magnificent. Walking into Padre - The East Brunswick Project, you are hit with the thick aroma of freshly roasted beans and that, in a word is, intoxicating.
It would be hard to find anywhere more devoted to the coffee bean that the proprietors of Padre. All the baristas here learn how to roast beans and the staff's coffee knowledge is impressive. On offer each day are several different blends. There's the Padre house blend, which is quite a mild brew with malt and toffee characteristics and other varieties change on a daily basis. There's fair trade organic single origin coffee such as the East Timorese Maubisse or the Sumatran Mandheling Gayo Mountain. Selections also include produce from Malawi, Uganda, Panama and Ethiopia.
What also makes Padre a little special is the hand-made ceramic cups they serve their coffee in. The crockery adds to the all round earthy feel of the place and the light filled back room houses a communal table, art that celebrates the joy of coffee and large sacks of beans. Coffee sizes also come in bowls, aeropress or siphon.
Out front you can sit at the bar and watch the barista in action or settle in for the afternoon in an obliging armchair. Food wise, Padre is all about coffee, but, you can get a muffin, a friand or a cupcake so afternoon 'tea' here is favourable.
For those on the south side, Padre also has a shop at the South Melbourne Market.
