More hidden than Shangri La, Monk Bodhi Dharma is a beautiful caffeine heaven on Earth well worth seeking out

Editorial

The basic tenets of Buddhism involve mastering a series of goals in order to best live one's life, known as the Eight Fold Path. Well, let's just say that finding Monk Bodhi Dharma, a safe haven of vegan and organic loveliness, invokes a similarly long discovery. How on earth a cafe ever appeared in a disused brick outhouse and former bakery in a private car park tucked behind Woolworths one will never know.

Still, persevere my child, for the enlightenment within is well worth the arduous journey. Monk, and that's all I can spell of the name which refers to the Indian Buddhist monk who coined Zen, is an absolute heaven on Earth. Far from the madding crowds of Carlisle Street, a long, dark, gnarly old shared bench welcomes cosy camaraderie between neighbours, while a church-like pew lines the bar and a few smaller tables park near the door. Flowers dangle from suspended glass bottles.

Monk roasts their beans on site, and make all food including the beautiful cakes here too. I had a stunning orange and almond friande that was gluten free for all you wheat-haters out there, washed down with a creamy house blend latte then a rich and fruity Nicaraguan single origin espresso. If you need something more substantial the daily specials include baguettes, soup and stews. They're also super friendly and happy to fill you in on all the coffee lore you may require in order to find ultimate happiness.
