Princess Theatre

The Big Gun among Melbourne’s cluster of theatres worthy of the Andrew Lloyd Webber treatment, The Princess Theatre has seen it all. Originally built in 1884 as a performance/equestrian space, the Princess, in one guise or another has been a player in the Melbourne theatre belt ever since.

Editorial

Most recently renovated in 1987, The Princess has played every major musical you can think of - and is still going strong. In addition to its rich theatrical history, The Princess Theatre is also famous for its ghost sightings. The resident ghost, 'Frederici', is said to be the spirit of one Frederick Baker, who in 1888, during a particularly spellbinding scene of the Opera Faust, was sunk dramatically through a trapdoor returning to the fires of hell, from which he never returned, having a fatal heart attack in the process. To this day, there have been too many sightings of Freddy to mention, and for years, in a brilliant example of strategic marketing, the third-row seat in the dress circle was kept vacant in his honour.

The Princess Theatre still boldly holds the title of 'Australia's most popular theatre', and it's comforting to know that despite the rapid pace of progress that surrounds us today, it's highly likely Jersey Boys will still be playing at the Princess Theatre in a 100 years time.
