City Recital Hall Angel Place
Editorial
The 1200-strong venue opened its doors in 1999, and boasts an architecturally designed auditorium in a classic shoebox shape - proven the world over as the perfect way to hear western classical music. It was the first time Sydney had seen a new concert venue since the Opera House was built in 1973. The design copies 19th century European concert halls, with gently sloping stalls and two galleries that hug the sides and rear of the auditorium.
Concert-goers are well looked after, with plush plum upholstery and a well-stocked bar in the foyer of each level. Both levels are reached by a grand marble staircase. Gold leaf and blonde timber panelling complete the sense of occasion.
Acoustically designed for fine music and spoken word, the Hall is a regular haunt for the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. While the auditorium's reverberation is set for chamber music, acoustic banners can be re-jigged to accommodate spoken word or amplified music.
Artists like Camille, Bon Iver, The National and many performers on the Sydney Festival circuit have strutted their stuff onstage, giving the classics a run for their money.
