Three Bags Full is the best thing to hit Abbotsford in many years

Editorial

The inner-city suburb of Abbotsford has been a slow-cook sure thing to reach the top of the hip-barometer for a long time. It's not there yet, however, the emergence of Three Bags Full in one of its quiet back streets has, in one rapid-action, elevated that process faster than anything else in recent years.

A once easily forgotten corner of Melbourne, Abbotsford is coming up in the world due to a new wave of young groovers focusing attention on its many assets, not the least of whom are the rag traders who work in and around its many nineteenth century industrial buildings and cute Victorian terraces. Three Bags Full has laid claim to part of one such asset, the historic former Denton Mills Hat Factory and created quite a fuss in doing so. The fine folk of Abbotsford have been flocking to this café since it first began operations in mid 2010 and word has spread fast, such that capacity crowds create long lines on weekends and only the most hardened of the café-chic dare join the scramble for seats during other peak times.

Three Bags Full brings with it a pedigree reputation for serving their own blend of Five Senses coffee that they roast themselves and prepare for consumption via a Clover coffee dripper ($5) or Espresso machine ($3.50). Brilliant coffee is a given at Three Bags Full - the management (from Liar Liar in Hawthorn and Apte in Alphington) have made their reputations on ensuring that this is always the case. Great coffee is supported by a hearty all day breakfast ($6 - $16.50), casual lunch menu ($11.50 - $14.50) and a range of fresh juices, smoothies and shakes. Get in early and get in quickly.
