The Retreat Hotel
Editorial
Sitting in the front bar you realise just how old the place is. The bar is separated from the restaurant, sending you back to the times when just the blokes were allowed in here, and if you were too young or too female, then you sipped your shandy out the back. But not anymore of course; all the charm of the front bar is open to everyone. The restaurant has all the same old-school personality, with a main dining room and a smaller, more intimate room appropriately titled "the snug". The Retreat is a great place for functions too, with two private function rooms, The "Carringbush Room" for larger get togethers and the "Sullivan's Room" for smaller groups. And yes it is where The Sullivans was filmed!
The menu comprises a mix of typical pub fare from fish and chips to steak, with some more contemporary dishes as well as some vegetarian and gluten-free options. The prices reflect the local pub style, so won't break the bank, and the same goes for the drinks. There's a good selection of Australian wines by the glass or bottle, local and imported beers, spirits and liquors to choose from. In saying that, I probably wouldn't go asking for your favourite variation of frozen margarita or organic caramel flavoured frappe-latte. But who needs all that anyway when you have good old-fashioned substance.
