Abbotsford Convent Bakery
Editorial
The Convent Bakery has taken up residence within the walls of the Convent Annexe or “kitchen wing” which the Sisters of the Good Shepherd used to make all their food. Easily one of my favourite spots in Melbourne, the tranquillity of the area, a mere four kilometres from the CBD, evokes my creativity while managing to relax me at the same time. Sit indoors at Parisian bistro style tables and chairs resting on Welsh slate (brought over by boat in the 1800s) and admire the decor, untouched save for a lick of paint; or choose to sit in the leafy outdoors at large wooden tables under market umbrellas.
Two woodfired masonry ovens, built in 1901, are used by artisan bakers to create a variety of breads using only the finest organic flour with no additives, enhancers or chemicals (styles might include white sourdough, honey and oat, or ciabatta). The French and European inspired pastries are also a must, best enjoyed with a cup of organic coffee which is roasted on the premises. Dine on savoury dishes such as the chicken and avocado ciabatta with chicken breast, tasty cheese, tomato, lettuce and guacamole salsa, or the broccoli and cauliflower quiche with bechamel sauce. Sweet tempters include baked ricotta Danish, or ramanini cookies with baked chocolate and hazelnuts.

Hard to get to, but worth the effort, the food and atmosphere are great. It's in the Entertainment Book too, so don't forget your discount voucher!

Give it a wide berth. Attempted to dine here today,3 Jan 2010. Upon ordering was informed there were no chicken burgers. Returned to table then back to counter and then informed, no warm chicken salad. I suggested that I might have been told this extra vital piece of information previously and was there anything else I should be aware of that is not available. I was told there wasn't. Eventually, some of our food arrived. My steak sandwich with cold chips and a fruit salad with the most ordinary looking watermelon. And then the clincher. We were informed that there were no more lentil burgers. We requested our money back but received no apology. Go next door to Lentil As Anything.

The actual place was good, however the service and food were terrible..Fairtrade coffee? maybe, but something suggest the amount of international workers at the bakery there wouldnt be much fair trade going on..Please lift your standards the Convent is a great place to be..ashame about the bakery

Ordered Benedict was the wost hollindaise ever tasted, eggs were hard, and the rest of my food was swimming in fat. Inedible food will not be returning for breakfast. On the other hand coffee was good and would return for a coffee.
