Zum Cafe
Editorial
With a slick internal makeover of one of the beautiful old sandstone warehouses lining Salamanca Place, Zum stands out as one of the few beacons of quality in the area’s general sea of mediocrity. Along with the nearby Retro Cafe, it’s the day’s heart-starter favourite for a diverse crowd of politicians, journos, office workers, business people and those more leisured souls who take their lattes al fresco and watch the city come to life. It then continues to buzz with in-betweens at lunch and well into the night.
As the only cafe on the Salamanca strip serviced by its own bakery, Zum’s breakfast croissants, danishes, muffins, friands, cakes and breads are among the best in town. The OJ is squeezed fresh to order and their Santa Vittoria lemon iced tea is the perfect summer quencher, while the affogato is not for the faint-hearted or diet-conscious. There’s an interesting, well-sourced and fairly priced wine list with 15 wines available by the glass. The lunch menu runs to house-made pastas, modern salads, focaccias and panini while things get more serious at dinner with chef Paul Brown’s excellent signature dishes of Thai-style corn and prawn fritters and Atlantic salmon and lime curry. Plus you’ll find goodies like flash-fried squid, buttermilk chicken, seafood risotto and a retro eye fillet with Cafe de Paris butter.
