Originally a church built way back 1864, now it is home to the Hobart Repertory Society, who love the intimacy of their little theatre that seats just 490 people.

Editorial

Just like in ye olden days when Repertory theatre was how the average Joe Blow got his dose of culture, the Playhouse has been providing Tasmanians with a quality theatre fix since 1937. This is theatre for the people, by the people and you don't have to mortgage your house to see it. Their motto is great entertainment at popular prices; you can buy a season ticket and see five shows under $100.
You could hardly call the choices of this amateur theatre company avant garde: The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Steel Magnolia's, Agatha Christie Spider's Web, Bram Stoker's Dracula and um, Barry Manilow's Copacabana to name a recent few.

But with a solid history, passionate long-standing members and constant new blood they are known to produce high quality, popular amateur theatre. Fun for the public and an opportunity for artistic expression and training for dozens of actors, directors and playwrights who have gone on to national and international acclaim. One of the famous is playwright and actor Alan Hopgood who started at the theatre in his teens and who is best known for playing Jack Lassiter on Neighbours and Colin Dean and John Zintavelonis who both went on to star in Billy Elliott.
