The Astor Grill
Editorial
Like the cut of the men's suits, things change slowly at the Astor and it's best, as it always has been, to avoid the menu's more creative touches and stick with the simple. Oysters, freshly shucked and served as nature intended, are always a good bet, and they do good things with crayfish when in season, but the real attraction is the steak: thick, juicy and chargrilled to order - as good as you'll find anywhere in the state. There's a good vintage selection of blockbuster reds to accompany them from one of the city's better wine lists.

Really good, and value for money, especially if you choose the 'select' menu ($36 a head, weeknights). The service is friendly and efficient, the atmosphere old-fachioned and comforting; wine list is good and reasonably priced. Maybe it is all a bit dated for those who want unusual flavours and pretentiousness; maybe it is a bit 'safe'; but if you want good food and a menu you can relate to every time, go here.
