Knopwood's Retreat

A lofty name belies the earthly pleasures of this top-notch waterfront pub.

Editorial

How the very Reverend Knopwood would feel to find a pub named in his honour is uncertain. The magistrate, minister and moralist did bring religion to Van Diemen's Land. Then again, history tells us that he also brought cases of plonk.

At this handsome sandstone pub, glasses, if not cases, of plonk are at hand. This is, after all, Tasmania where no proud publican fails to showcase the state's cold climate treasures. A good selection of wine complements the pub's simple, well executed grub.

But at Knoppie's, the beer's the thing. A very decent variety of draught has seduced a loyal following. A picture postcard location, cheery staff and good nosh doesn't hurt the place's reputation either.

Make no mistake, Knoppie's is immensely popular. On a Friday night, the waterside joint buzzes with a post-work electricity. In fact, the energy is of such a pitch, you might wonder what kind of Retreat it might provide for the good Reverend.

Then again, as a local, you might not. As Salamanca transforms, sadly and inevitably, from a local fixture full of pubs and unaffected cheer, Knopwood's has become something of a retreat.

The joint fits right into Hobart's heavily touristed future; but it tips its hat to the past. Tipsy Reverends included.

SM King, May 2010
