Urban Bistro

Since opening in 2002, an innovative, modern and contemporary eating establishment has grown and flourished on the eastern boundary of the city opposite the Victoria Park Racecourse. The brainchild of two vastly experienced hospitality people, the husband and wife team of Spencer Cole and Bethany Finn, Urban Bistro is making its mark on our city.

Editorial

If nothing else, Urban Bistro is certainly urban. Perched above the traffic on Fullerton Rd, at first glance it may seem an unusual location for a restaurant. Inside, it feels a world away, with frosted glass shielding the cars from view and accentuating the gum trees swaying above the race track opposite. The decor has been well-chosen to emphasise the calm within; neutral tones, comfortable seating and soft furnishings embellish the harmonious space.

The food has been getting great reviews, and a quick glance over the menu shows you why. The breakfast menu is loaded with early-morning favourites - and those struggling with the concept may fancy a bloody mary or sparkling white to kick start the day. Lunch and dinner are served from a delicious modern Australian menu. Start with smoked haddock and potato chowder with mustard and soft egg, or the carpaccio of tuna rolled in sumac and pepper with beetroot jus and cress. The pan-fried potato gnocchi with chestnuts, chorizo and chilli is a delight, as is the braised rabbit crepinette with chanterelle risotto and herb salad. Main courses are sure to satisfy; try the five-spice duck pie with chilli, onion jam and ruby chard, or the harissa spiced freshwater marron with saffron broth, vegetables and rouille.
