The Daniel O'Connell Hotel, Adelaide's most authentic Irish pub, may just be one of the best in Australia.

Editorial

If you've seen one Irish pub you've seen them all. Adelaide's Daniel O'Connell Hotel doesn't do anything to change that. From the moment you step through the doors you're in familiar territory. Specifically, you're looking at a lot of wood panelling, traditional prints on the walls, brass and copper light fittings, booth seating and the like. That said, this popular venue does the Irish look better than most. The owners have obviously invested a lot of money into the fit-out - the front room, lounge, beer garden and restaurant are all rustic, warm and inviting.

As is customary in an Irish pub, Guinness and Kilkenny have pride of place behind the bar. If drinking pints of dark Irish stout is a bit much you can always opt for a regular beer, a cider, wine, a shot of booze or whatever happens to be your poison. The only thing they're not real big on is cocktails, which is fair enough given they are actually a pub. Of course, come St Patrick's Day your choice moves from dark stout to green.

Drop in during the evening and you can complement your big drink with live music. The O'Connell hosts live bands most nights of the week, showcasing both covers and originals. Alternatively, you can enjoy contemporary pub meals in the restaurant, or get some fresh air in the courtyard bar. There may be a whole lot of Irish pubs about, but the Daniel O'Connell Hotel manages to stand out in a crowded market.
