The Banque Wine Bar
Editorial
The name may be the same, but there are no worries about being morally bankrupt at this bank. Housed in an old bank (you'd never guess, right?) the Banque bar in North Adelaide is well-known for serving drinks stiffer than Stalin and cocktails smoother than jazz. The late license on weekends helps accommodate those after-work drinkers intent on a little more than a few relaxing ales.
The loft-style design naturally lends itself to being easy on the eye. And frankly, you'll want as few distractions as possible to work your sights over the wine and cocktail list. Both are compiled by staff and exhibit a degree of care only seen in those caring for orphaned puppies. Australia gets a fair representation in the wine list, with New Zealand bringing up the rear. There are a few French champagnes, but you may want to save those for special occasions (only the first glass of champagne counts, really).
The cocktail list covers a range of classics and house designs. While there are a few that change with the seasons (fruit etc), you'll be able to choose a favourite and come back for it week after week. And if there's nothing that takes your fancy, you probably don't have a heartbeat ... kidding. The staff are more than happy to accommodate any whims, you merely need ask.
A side note: get in early on a Thursday or Friday night if you want a seat. The after-work crowd are serious about their leisure hours, and you may be left standing.
