British Hotel

The British Hotel in North Adelaide is renowned for its tantalising cuisine, friendly service and great atmosphere. The British opened its doors to the public back in 1838 and now holds one of the oldest hotel licences in South Australia. Things were a little different back then, but the old nostalgia and charm of the British remains today.

Editorial

The gastro pub is an increasingly occurring phenomena these days. People want the laid-back atmosphere of a friendly local, with the a la carte cuisine of a fine dining restaurant. Simple. Well the British Hotel in North Adelaide is not only one of the oldest hotels in our grand city of churches (can't you guess from the name?), but also boasts a tasty selection of Australian and European beers, with some pretty tasty grub on top.

Tap wise, you can expect a few Australian and imported beers to flow with grace from the bar. Try a pint of Stella with your fish and chips (nothing's more British than that!), or a Coopers Pale over a game of pool. There are also regular happy hours with rotating drink specials, which ensure the conversations keep flowing even if the brain switches off. And you can step outside into the courtyard for an extended vitamin D session or just to suck back some good ol', honest tobacco.

Cuisine is also a sticking point at the Brit, with many a punter coming back week after week for their favourite meal. Seasonal changes make for a bit of variety, but you can always find a decent steak or seafood meal on the menu. The hotel staff also pride themselves on their range of homemade deserts. Tuck into a piece of chocolate tart with a glass of Riesling the next time you drop in.

For some reason I always feel gypped when I come here. Steak eaters are safe as the steaks are good quality and cooked well for the price paid. I tried the lamb this time and the lamb portion was tiny (despite being a backstrap rather than a fillet) and overcooked. Service was excellent though as we didn't have a booking on a busy Friday night and a table was quickly re-set for us. Good wine list too.
