Hahndorf Inn Hotel & Cellars
Editorial
Just thirty minutes out of the capital, South Australia's German heritage becomes apparent. You can see it in the traditional fachwerk architecture of the picturesque Hahndorf or, if you prefer, you can taste it in one of many ales.
The staff of the homey Hahndorf Inn can take you on a tour of Germany's regions by means of lager; five of which are poured straight from the tap. Or, they can introduce you to the delights of folksy Deutsch cuisine. Those passing through the pretty town can select from a straight-ahead Australian style bar menu. But, with Giant Juicy Pickled Pork Hock simmering in the kitchen, you might allow your palate a journey to Bavaria.
Expect generous meal portions, excellent beer and a staff au fait with the heritage of the town. Don't expect from this family friendly joint an Oom-pah-themed Bavarian franchise. This is not a Disney-fied Germany but an extension of a tradition that started in this town with Lutheran settlers back in 1839.
And do expect to eat something at least the size of your head! You shall not go hungry in this well patronised spot. And you certainly won't go broke, either. However, at peak holiday times, you might be waiting for a table or a seat. Keep waiting. It's worth it. The Giant Juicy Pickled Pork Hock will hog all of your affection.
