Love beer, love life.

Editorial

The motto of the Holdfast, or 'Holdy' as it is known to locals, is "Love Beer, Love Life". Now, that should just about do it in terms of conjuring up the preconception of this place as a beer-swilling, all belching, all farting destination for all of Adelaide's card-carrying bogan tribesmen. Behold, however, the Holdy is not what it may seem.

Located in the beachside tourist hub of the palindromic Glenelg, the Holdy presents a far more civilised experience than its motto suggests. Its smartly turned out contemporary interior is enveloped by a classic heritage bluestone pub exterior that is well preserved and carefully maintained. A dining room, gaming room, function room and modern courtyard take the Holdfast beyond the corner pub status of yesteryear and make it an entertainment venue suitable for robust footy crews, family outings or elegant special gatherings.

$10 lunches and themed dinners such a Tuesday's rump steak night ($16) offer fairly common pub fare, but an additional a la carte menu is geared toward a more fine dining experience, albeit very accessible with nothing over $26. An on-site micro brewery produces 'Holdy Brew', reinforcing the Holdfast's reputation for serious beer drinking and nightly (cheap) drink specials go hand to mouth with live music, interactive entertainment and DJs. A wine list comprising nearly 100 choices by the glass or bottle make this pub an all-rounder.

Visitors to the genteel city of Adelaide will find the Holdfast on the route of the city's only tram service. An historic 'rattler' tram departs regularly from the city centre for suburban Glenelg, whose seaside location allows for a decent half-day excursion for an insight into part of South Australia's maritime heritage and the opportunity to kick back at this rather nice watering hole to boot.
