Editorial

In stark comparison to some of the modern monstrosities erected nowadays, buildings from the first half of the last century maintain a level of charm and elegance - no matter what their purpose. The City Destructor Complex on Halifax is a case in point. This beautiful heritage building, complete with an enormous brick chimney, incinerated Adelaide's rubbish for nearly half a century. Built in 1909, the building is interesting and beautiful, and in spite of its somewhat sordid past, is now home to a fabulous, bright and airy Greek restaurant.
Start with a selection of dips and pita bread; try the taramasalata, melinzanosalata, and banzarisalata, or there is a four island mixed platter if you can't decide which “salata” you want most. The long list of meze, salads, and sides means that this is a great place to share. Traditional main courses such as the moussaka made with minced beef, eggplant, potato, and zucchini, topped with bechamel sauce and eggplant crisps are delicious. Don't miss out on the kokinisto if it's available: a young tender goat slowly braised in a red wine and tomato sauce. Alternatively, if you're still in the mood for sharing, the platters prepared for two people offer a great selection of Greek delicacies.
