The Elephant
Editorial
The Elephant is a very British pub situated nearby the busy bits of Rundle Street, smack bang in the middle of the Adelaide CBD. It has . . . drum roll please . . . twenty-four beers on tap with a ratio of 2:1 of local to imported beers. This is a place for jollity and merriment, particularly if you are English and the Ashes are on and Australia are capitulating. Thus there was much merriment found at The Elephant during the most recent Ashes tour.
The Elephant is an incredibly attractive pub. Straight out of lore, the diagonal woodwork of the façade and the impeccable tiling on top display stunning workmanship that we simply don’t see much of. Admittedly, the interior is not a patch on the exterior, but it’s wholly authentic in a different way. Inside, booths run along the northern wall and the mighty wooden bar intimidates with its wide selection and asks the weary Rundler – what’s your poison?
Proudly pouring imperial pints (as many South Australians have to put up with miserly 425ml pints unlike the rest of the nation), The Elephants prices crash on Friday and Saturday nights when all beers are just $5 per pint. On these nights, live music acts hit hard upstairs whereas the sports fanatics can cheer downstairs. Food is above average pub grub but prices are very reasonable, with the bulk of the menu being around the $15 mark. A brave duo (or a big unit) can tackle the mixed grill/meat mountain ($25.90) which includes steak, lamb, sausage and kranksy pilled on top of chips and black pudding.
