Shotz

Shotz transforms from a quiet pool hall into a nightclub every day as the sun goes down.

Editorial

Before you say anything about the name it's worth pointing out that Shotz is in fact a pool hall during the day. And not just any pool hall - it's an old-school, grimey, pool shark's sort of joint that simply oozes character. Shotz obviously has a whole lot of history and it wears it as a badge of honour. You won't find any slick Tom Cruise types potting balls with style, just those who know how to hand out a humility lesson with a pool cue.

While daylight hours are set aside for pool, the venue really comes into its own after dark. That's when Shotz the pool hall becomes Shotz the club. While the tables don't go anywhere, the sound of eight balls being sunk in corner pockets is replaced with a soundtrack of indie and alternative rock. Meanwhile, the older folks standing around the tables make way for a younger crowd and many piercings and tattoos.

Keeping in line with Shotz's grungy shtick, the decor and drinking selection is kept reasonably basic. Coopers on tap is the beverage of choice, but they also offer basic spirits and, well, that's about it. If you're looking for a cocktail or a glass of their second cheapest wine then you're in the wrong place. If, on the other hand, you want jugs of beer, alt-rock, pool tables and piercings then Shotz is just the ticket.
