Although it may not be much to look at on the inside - what with the furniture that looks like it came from a number of deceased estates, or the carpet that's just begging for a nice, cleansing fire - Jive bar is one of this city's most happening live music joints. Indeed, if it didn't have the live market captured, most people might be hard up for a reason to come here. But, like most music dens, you won't come here just for a drink.
Having seen many incarnations since it was built as a theatre - from strip joint and a nightclub, to a disco bar and comedy lounge - Jive is one venue that knows how to put on a show, regardless of the current management's abilities. And speaking of current management, the team at Jive seem well and truly dedicated to bringing in the best in musical talent. Local and touring bands, plus top international acts, have all warmed the crowd with their scorching riffs. Many a person's hearing was no doubt well spent on a night in this bar.
And if you're wanting to chill out after the show, sidle up to the bar for a trusty VB or Stella, then go and teach that pinball machine who's boss. Chances are you'll be back some soon, so don't sweat it if you don't make the high score list.
