Jade Monkey

A laneway discovery.

Editorial

Slap bang in the middle of Adelaide's city centre is a little lane that offers a cute contrast to the commercial chain store jungle that is nearby Rundle Mall. Twin Street and the many other little lanes that network their way through Adelaide's CBD provide a layer of mystery and discovery to an otherwise very flat city. The Jade Monkey contributes to part of that second layer of interesting, out-of-the-way discoverables that Twin Street is well known for.

Boasting a line-up of live music genres such as jazz, hip hop, rock, folk, country and classical, 'The Jade', as it has come to be known by locals, is all about the stage that showcases different bands from Thursday to Saturday nights until late. Helping out, of course, is the bar that dispenses a wide range of bottled beer, such as the ubiquitous local Coopers Ale and imports such as Stella, Heineken and Boags, along with a reasonably-priced selection of local wines.

In an atmosphere that is evocative of a hint of Chinoiserie and a little bit of rock 'n' roll retro, this intimate watering hole fills with diverse noises and sights to become a visit again and again experience that is friendly, relaxed and ambient. A beer garden provides a refuge for smokers or for those suddenly overcome by eardrum fatigue. If you find yourself in Adelaide and feel the need to let your hair down, seek it out.
