We’re here, we’re queer and we fancy a beer

Editorial

Although the Hampshire Hotel may have earned its rainbow stripes as a gay pub, it's certainly not the sort of thing you might expect to find in the racier lanes of San Francisco's Castro precinct or Sydney's Darlinghurst. Here, you won't find go-go boys, foam parties or the high-hat thump of Handbag House.

What you will find in the place of a six foot bloke in reinforced Louboutins mixing body shots on the torsos of young studs to the hits of Lady Gaga is, in fact, a straight ahead Australian pub. For generations, the citizens of Adelaide have enjoyed a quiet frosty in the front bar or courtyard or a counter meal in what has become the bistro. In recent months, new licensees William Kennewell and Tim Marshall have done their bit to extend on this tradition.

Here, the beer lines are in good nick, the screens for sporting events are vast and shiny and the bistro offers a selection of pub grub meals; not one of which exceeds ten bucks.

For the past few years, The Hampshire has had endured a few personality changes but the word is, these latest publicans are determined to build a friendly and consistent business. This landmark next to the Chinatown strip has enjoyed more than just a new lick of paint.

the country hicks running this joint have got no idea!- the city used to support a very vibrant pub scene that all dissolved with the bad attitude and service of the large headed, lead poisoned ones from outback broken ill, maaate!!. no idea what Adelaide is or was and absolutely no idea how to take things forward - youre too young and don't belong. the MB mafia will play with you then drop you like a sad old stinky arse!!

shocking hotel, very bad service. need to drop their attitude and realise people have other options and dont necessarily need to support this pub.

-here with the brisbane boys- true, the place is very disappointing. Adelaide used to have a great pub, and a great scene. It looks like this pub has'nt really had any idea about how to continue this. From the last few visits it appears things will finish here soon. We have enjoyed other city pubs, and franky they have been more 'gay friendly'

- thats great guys - we just left ADELAIDE over the xmas new year period - and returning to the UK - in sydney ATM. I'm x-pat and could not belive what the city is now like. I'm glad to return home, and sooo glad to see the old faces from years ago - but the attitude of the owners of this place WAS so noticable...we loked our time down rundle - adelaide has lots to offer but certainly not around the grote st precinct.

I must agree with the comments above - i'm usure if it is all to do with bad management or really lack of ideas or imagination. i've heard of other reports from people that security is over zealous and a bit bias and painful for a pub that should be celebrating diversity.

glad i've noticed this -people should support their venues- i've not travelled out to this one again tho. from years of adelaide scene this is the one place that never really has worked. unfortunate but true. people always will comment that places come and go and never supported but this place would have to be the exception because THEY have never tried! give someone else a go - you've had your time and created nothing. time to go!!
