Empire Pool Lounge
Editorial
As the name suggests, Empire Pool Lounge is all about casual drinks and sinking balls. One of Adelaide's premier pool halls, it's been hosting tournaments for many years. It's also a popular spot for the after-work crowd. Bright, gaudy and spacious, it has little in common with the dives you might remember from your childhood. You won't find any gangster types or confidence tricksters hanging around here. And as much as we like the videoclip for Michael Jackson's Beat It, this isn't that kind of party. Basically, Empire Pool Lounge is a slick and modern affair. It's all burgundy carpets, low slung lights, casually strewn tables and lounges.
The drink selection is definitely geared towards a beer-drinking, male-oriented crowd. There's an extensive selection of bottled imports and on-tap options. There's also plenty of spirits if you'd rather go for a Tom Cruise/Paul Newman, The Colour Of Money, type vibe. Actually, that scene is probably due a revival, so if you want to get ahead of the curve and get some practise in now would be the time. In the meantime, you can just grab a pre-mixed bottle of alco-pop and enjoy the atmosphere.
