Cafe Tempo

Located in the old foyer of one of the city's earliest movie theatres, this traditional Italian is culturally rich. Deeply flavoured dishes showcase the skill of good Italian cooking.

Editorial

If a restaurant can be compared to a piece of music then Cafe Tempo is an up-beat, harmonious piece with colourful tones and a hidden depth. The elements fit together nicely: the split-level space is open and spacious with tables spilling out onto the pavement providing the structure on which the rest is built; the service is relaxed and efficient as though driven by a hidden beat; and the food is sensational, singing out the high notes.

The steady rhythm of Tempo is evident in its production of consistent, no frills fare; the usual breakfast favourites are all there (bacon and eggs, omelettes, waffles, muesli, croissants and fresh fruit salad), as are the Italian staples: cannelloni, spaghetti, penne, risotto and scallopini. The basics are built upon, adding depth to the menu, with dishes such as the carpaccio salmone (house cured Atlantic salmon, thinly sliced and served with a salad of shaved pickled fennel, capers, parsley and grissini sticks), or the agniello alla griglia (grilled lamb chops marinated with rosemary and pepper, served with a salad of rucola, pear and shaved parmesan, dressed with pear balsamic and extra virgin olive oil). An assortment of soups, salads, sandwiches and side dishes, along with the complementary wine list, complete the ensemble. Enjoy!

This is a good lunch venue in that the service was quick and we were in and out within the hour. The food was ok. my mushroom and ricotta cannelloni turned out to be spinach and ricotta with mushrooms on top.
