Cafe Kowloon

A myriad of sights, sounds and smells: this cafe may not be in Kowloon, but the tastes on your tongue can take you there.

Editorial

The clutter of crockery as waiters bustle between tables, the chatter of Cantonese in the background, and the plethora of menu items to choose from all add up to an authentic Chinese experience on Gouger Street - Adelaide's Chinatown. From the outside, the red and gold Chinese characters covering the door are a giveaway of what you'll find within. The set-up is your typical Chinese restaurant, but the size is not, which means this place does get busy. Pop in for yum cha at lunchtime and pick from the trolleys as they rattle by, or drop by for dinner and make a selection from the 106 items on the menu.

You can stick to the usual gweilo (foreigner) favourites like the sweet and sour pork, the Peking duck, or the ever reliable honey chicken. For an adventurous culinary journey try something more authentic: the chicken feet in white-wine sauce perhaps, or maybe the shark fin soup. For dessert there's the all-time favourite deep-fried ice-cream or the regional coconut jelly. Whatever you choose, you won't be disappointed because this is a great Chinese restaurant on a street that's known for them.
