Berkeley Hotel
Editorial
Despite looking like an Irish pub from the outside, the Berkely Hotel is proudly Australian. How so, you ask? Cheap beer, is your answer. One of the cheapest happy hours in the city, the Berkeley draws the crowds every afternoon from 4.30pm, to grab a cheap schooner and watch the world go by from the balcony upstairs. Apart from all that, it's a no-frills pub that makes no bones about serving cheap grub with no pretentions.
Your usual Aussie beers make up the tap roster, while the fridges stock a few more locals and imports. Wines are on the average side, but you wouldn't really come here if you wanted to snuffle your nose around a glass of Grange Hermitage. Don't ask for a cocktail if you know what's good for you. One can be made, but you'll have to put up with a few jeers from locals if you ask for a time-consuming mojito during happy hour - aka beer o'clock.
Upstairs you'll also catch a little dancefloor action in the Viper Room. With a relaxed door policy, the occasional flotsam from Hindley Street wanders in, but most of the time it's a kosher crowd just wanting to down a few shots and hit the dancefloor to find their next true love.
