Ambassadors Hotel
Editorial
Originally opened for business in 1840, the Ambassadors Hotel has undergone extensive renovations and additions in the intervening years. These days it's a multi-function venue incorporating a hotel, restaurant and bar. With its unassuming, old-world charm, the Ambassadors's front bar is popular for casual drinks. Long, wooden benches and rustic decor give the room an English pub atmosphere and there are plenty of draught beers to choose from.
While the frontbar is popular with the day crowd, it's the Marble Bar that attracts all the attention. As the name suggestions, there's a liberal use of marble throughout and some Roman style pillars to give the place a slightly surreal edge. This is all complimented with open fires and an extensive wine selection. Cocktails are also available if you're in the market for a big drink. The selection isn't huge, but there's enough there to keep you occupied.
With its CBD location and laidback atmosphere, the Ambassadors Hotel has created a nice little niche for itself. It might not be reinventing the bar scene, but it's affordable and charming, a jack-of-all trades. Oh, and if it all gets a little too much you can always get yourself a hotel room upstairs.
