When was the last time you treated yourself to a day at the Zoo? Maybe it's time you did again, then.

Adelaide Zoo first opened in 1883, and is the second oldest zoo in Australia. It's also part of the Adelaide Botanical Gardens, and spread over 8 hectares, it has over 1,800 animals and 300 different species, from native animals and marine life, to international exotic wildlife. It's also unique, because unlike many of Australia's zoos, it has retained many of its original architectural features, which have been heritage listed, including the Elephant House, the Head Keeper's Cottage, the Main Gates and Entrance Walls, the Rotunda and the Director's Dwelling.

Of course, animals are no longer housed in these buildings, but are now in exhibits such as the South East Asian Rainforest, Seal Bay, Jewels of Asia, Australian Rainforest Wetlands walk-through aviary, Nocturnal House, Reptile House and their baboon exhibit, complete with large viewing windows. They also have a new Giant Panda Exhibit - check out the video above!

Adelaide Zoo also has a number of successful breeding and conservation programs, including yellow-footed rock wallabies, greater bilbies, red pandas, golden-lion tamarins and Sumatran tigers.

The zoo has a function centre for your wedding or any other occasion; there's the Children's Zoo, educational tours, behind-the-scenes tours and up-close-and-personal activities to really explore the zoo, and of course feeding times for some of the animals - always a highlight. There's enough to keep you here for more than a day, actually…

For more information on all of these features, including how to book tickets for entry into the giant panda exhibit, check out the Adelaide Zoo website.
