Mizu is located in the trendy suburb of Teneriffe not far from the Brisbane River. This area is a mish-mash of apartment blocks, old buildings and funky renovated apartment blocks that have been made out of the old buildings. Among it all you will find Mizu, quietly minding its own business on Macquarie Street. While the exterior of the restaurant looks quite subdued and modest, there is a lot going on behind the scenes. Mizu not only offers great authentic Japanese cuisine, it also holds sake tasting evenings, sushi cooking classes and even origami classes for the kids.
The restaurant is owned and run by Japanese people, unlike surprisingly many other Japanese eateries. As with all authentic cuisine, the menu offers fun, healthy and delicious options that you may not have encountered before. For starters try the freshly blanched edamame beans (soybeans) in the pod with sea salt, then graze your way through the menu. The crab and soba salad is good, as is the beautifully presented beef tataki on Asian greens with a ponzu garlic sauce and lotus chips. For mains try the slow-cooked Bangalow pork belly in soy, sake, garlic and ginger served with steamed bak choy and marinated boiled egg. All the regular favourites are available as well such as gyoza (fried dumplings), seafood tempura and wagyu beef. Don't miss the sake tasting evenings for a combination of fun and knowledge.
